This free workshop is limited to 25 participants* 
 
WoodSolutions is seeking to gauge interest for organising a two day detailed engineering workshop on Monday 5 November and Tuesday 6 November, in Perth.

With the recent introduction of Deemed-to-Satisfy fire provisions for protected lightweight timber frame solutions within the Building Code of Australia, enquiries on the structural design of lightweight timber frame has increased.

Structural design information on timber framed buildings contained within current Australian Standards and industry guides are based on two storey houses and may not be appropriate for mid-rise timber framed buildings.

The workshop is being provided free of charge by WoodSolutions for any practicing Australian structural engineers carrying out or intending to carry out the design of mid-rise timber framed buildings.

*The workshop is limited to 25 persons and is restricted to a maximum of three individuals from any one company. Please note this workshop will not include the design of mass timber buildings i.e. CLT.

  • Stud design
  • Floor cassette design
  • Axial Shortening and Differential Movement considerations
  • Fire design and other considerations
  • Acoustic considerations
  • Connectors and Tie-down design
  • Lateral and over turning resistance design
  • Robustness, Earthquake

The course will focus on timber building systems, timber grades and sizes that are readily available within Australia.

Participants outside of Perth will be responsible for their own travel and accommodation.

Dr Geoff Boughton
Geoff is director of an engineering consultancy that specialises in timber and is based in Perth. He teaches part-time in timber design and is currently an adjunct associate professor at James Cook University. He has presented Masterclasses on timber engineering for University of Tasmania, professional development for IEAust and AIBS, and has delivered seminars and papers on timber topics at Australian conferences and in the WoodSolutions information programs. He is a member of a number of Australian Standards and ISO committees on timber structures. Geoff has also been involved in many surveys of buildings after wind and earthquake events. This has given him an insight into the performance of many different materials in buildings under extreme loads.

He is the author of over 100 technical papers and a number of books including the Timber Design Handbook HB108-2013 published by Standards Australia.

Andrew Dunn
Andrew is the CEO Timber Development Association. He manages the association that carries out research and market development activities for the timber industry. His main area of research is in fire and acoustic for mass and lightweight timber buildings and was responsible for the introduced CLT into Australia. He has also participates in a number of Australian Standards committees on timber and building design as well as represented the industry nationally and internationally.
