Overview

Impact resistant polycarbonate panels form the upper walls and roof, giving the little building a lantern like quality. The base is solid and private where required, and open and transparent elsewhere to maximise visibility, and airflow. The location was previously dark at night, so passive surveillance and lighting were a key aspect of the design.

Structure

A composite frame of steel and recycled hardwood supports the lantern, and recycled timber battens provide degrees of privacy and passive surveillance.

Steel rods brace the spotted gum post and beam structure, which is lifted off the ground by steel footings.

The previous life of the recycled timber can be seen in its imperfections, which add character to a building designed for very utilitarian use. This subtle use of material character brings the structure to life.
