Product performance

Timber is one of the world’s top performing construction materials. Tried and tested over centuries, it’s inherent beauty, strength and durability has seen it remain one of the most popular building materials to this day.

Developments and advancements in engineered wood products and in timber treatments mean that timber can now be used where once materials like steel or concrete were the only option. And in key areas of acoustics, thermal performance, strength and fire resistance – timber is not just capable of answering a wide range of specifications but also of performing strongly, each and every time.

Acoustic performance

Not only aesthetically pleasing, timber also provides excellent acoustic properties, with many high-end architectural projects featuring internal timber applications.

Bushfire performance

Timber can be used internally in all BAL zones. The external use of timber requires more care and planning, especially on higher BAL rated sites.

How does the RTH program operate?

The Resilient Timber Homes program has a clear value proposition:

  • Develop and test a better method to design and construct, with respect to business-as-usual and minimum Code requirements, in order to
  • Be beneficial to both the program partners and the home owners/users (i.e. lower risk, future-proof real estate values, reduced maintenance costs, lower Council rates…).

The program is:

Strength performance

Timber’s superior strength qualities provide a versatile building material best utilised for structural applications - from beams, walls and flooring through to formwork and large timber panels.

Structural fire performance

In a fire, timber performs in a measurable, predictable way allowing designers the ability to create strong, durable, fire resistant timber constructions.

The impact of natural hazards

The effects of bushfires, floods, storms, and other extreme weather events are becoming increasingly critical for our communities, environment, and economy.

The RTH partnership

The Resilient Timber Homes program is managed by WoodSolutions through a Steering Committee supported by a group of experienced and dedicated partners.

Research Partners are involved in the design and management of the whole program and/or a specific activity. They get full IP rights for commercial outcomes and share rights for non-commercial ones.

Thermal performance

As a naturally insulating material, timber has strong thermal performing properties. Construction design using timber, with a focus on energy efficiency will maximise comfort and minimise non renewable energy use.

Why resilient timber homes

Code-compliant timber frame construction is robust and resilient when subjected to adverse and extreme conditions, including those associated with floods, bushfires, and cyclones, for every location in Australia. And they provide more than just life safety (which is the main objective of the NCC) and adequate property protection through good durability and easy maintenance. They offer better comfort and wellness. That’s why timber framed homes are so popular with developers, builders, and owners/occupiers.
