Overview

The adaptive reuse of the former cigarette factory's industrial shell has set the backdrop for the new timber post and beam intervention.

Structure

The double height timber grid structure is conceptually the main architectural feature. Designed to be modular and exposed, it visually links the outdoor and indoor spaces.

Internally, the grid serves a practical structural purpose, carrying services such as lighting, AV, brewery mechanical equipment and beer pythons. Integrated planters form a secondary functional and aesthetic use.

Externally the grid is used to support retractable roofs, translucent roofs, and walls. Intertwined with the landscaping, it allows the space to develop character and evolve over time.

All connections are bolted, which, along with the modularity of the large members, is an excellent strategy for designing for disassembly. The timber beams can be reused at the end of the building’s lifespan, or adapted when required.

Interior

Minimal finishes within the brewery building create a contemporary but industrial feel. Found objects have been incorporated into the interior strategy by Studio Y to build on the industrial referencing of the building’s past.

A staircase through the beer hall leads up onto a bridge above the brewery area, providing a fantastic perspective of the beer hall and brewery area from above.

The timber grid spatially divides the large industrial space, creating cosy nooks and seating areas. The warm and natural building material contrasts beautifully with the practicalities of exposed service pipes and conduit, ultimately producing a dynamic space. A U-shaped bar forms another part of the spatial strategy, separating the beer hall from the beer garden.

A clear concept was developed for the lighting design, with the aim of replicating a sunset beer session. All light fittings were tailored to have layers of optimised filters that replicate the natural colours of a sunset. The lighting designers, Ambience, even took the step of  refurbishing the original factory light fixtures to fit the new design.
