From testing timber out in the elements to extracting its DNA

Follow along with Andrew as he visits Professor Jeff Morrell and his team at the University of Queensland’s Timber Durability Centre.  We learn all about timber’s lifespan, how we can optimise the choice of timber and treatments for every application and maximise the use of timber.

These studies are long-term and range from testing timber out in the elements to extracting its DNA with high tech equipment. The work Professor Morrell and his team are doing will help us learn how to use timber in a way that is better for the environment and will help the building industry adapt to and address a changing climate.

The team is even studying how to protect power poles across Australia from decay and termites so that you can continue charging the device you are reading this on now!

“We want to increase the time frame that we can use it. So, we want to understand the durability better,” says Linda Moss, PhD Student and researcher at UQ Timber Durability Centre.

Learn more about timber, how we use it and how we can optimise timber solutions for our built environment that will contribute to a low carbon future.
