WoodSolutions will partner with the Australian Institute of Building Surveyors in delivering a series of hands-on training workshops specifically tailored for the AIBS membership. These workshops will provide detailed training in relation to:

i) Changes to the National Construction Code to permit Mid-rise Timber Buildings up to 25m effective height; and
ii) WoodSolutions educational timber tutorials.

A Proposal-for-Change to create voluntary Deemed-to-Satisfy (DTS) provisions in the National Construction Code (NCC), Building Code of Australia Volume 1 (BCA) was submitted by Forest & Wood Products Australia (FWPA) to allow the use of timber construction systems in Class 2 (apartments), Class 3 (hotels) and Class 5 (offices) buildings up to 25 metres in effective height (termed ‘mid-rise’ construction).
The provisions address both traditional ‘timber-frame’ and new ‘massive timber’ systems such as cross-laminated timber (CLT) with the use of appropriate layers of fire-resistant plasterboard (i.e. fire-protected timber) and the use of NCC compliant fire sprinkler systems.

The morning hands-on workshops will work through the WoodSolutions Technical Guide on Mid-rise Timber Buildings and provide attendees with the knowledge to confidently implement the NCC changes. The presentations will be delivered by Boris Iskra (FWPA) and Paul England (EFT Consult) who were principally involved in the development and submission of the NCC proposal on behalf of FWPA.

WoodSolutions Tutorials will also be provided in the afternoon and provide informative and practical timber related information for Building Surveyors. Discussions will include Wood Basics, Design for Durability, Using Wood in Bushfire-prone Areas, Fire Safety and Performance of Wood.

This session will be delivered by Colin MacKenzie.
