Timber Connectors

WS TDG 52 Timber Connectors cover

This guide covers lightweight timber-framing applications and mass timber construction. It has been written to help designers make informed choices in designing timber connectors by understanding what factors influence the capacity or degradation of the connection.

Orange Fungus

Several different fungi have an orange fruiting body but it's not necessary to know exactly what it is - all feed on damp wood and all can be treated in the same way. It might be best to discard the glazing bead and install a new one, preferably of a more durable timber than meranti. Before treating the window frame itself it must be allowed to dry so the treatment will be absorbed into the wood. If you have access to creosote it is a very effective anti-fungal treatment but has a strong odour and is a skin irritant, also it's not readily available as a DIY product.

BAL-FZ Stairs and Balustrades

There are no requirements for balustrades and handrails that are 125mm or more away from the building, so any timber that is suitable for exposure to the weather could be used. However, stair treads in BAL-FZ must be of non-combustible material, fibre-cement sheet, or a system that complies with  Australian Standard 1530.8.2, Methods for fire tests on building materials, components and structures. We are unaware of any timber stair system that has passed the test specified in AS 1530.8.2.
