Overview

Timber was a purposeful choice for the client's design, as they were looking for an addition that would not compete with the existing building.

A simple, honest, pragmatic form is at the heart of this project.

Spotted Gum is the singular external material used for the extension, allowing the cladding to be the hero, while the simple form harks back to the pragmatism of mid-century construction.

Exterior

Secret fixing was used for the spotted gum cladding. The meticulous approach of the builder ensured a clean, linear detailing of the recycled material . A 75 x 19mm rough sawn board was used, coated in a ‘charred black’ stain.

Spotted gum was also used for decking boards, in a 89x19mm board, coated with Cutek 50 oil finish.

Timber cladding became a lightweight solution, which reinforced the imagery of a simple form designed to hover in the landscape, creating a sense of living amongst the canopy of the large Jacaranda to the street. The striking, low-maintenance material accents the surrounding greenery.

The further use of spotted gum on the deck and soffits provides a rich, warm contrast to the dramatic black char of the facade, while working to tie the elements together from the outside in. The underside of the deck was clad in spotted gum decking boards where external, and fibre cement where under enclosed space above. The spotted gum timber boards have a rustic rough sawn profile. The solid timber boards are fixed horizontally to play-on the traditional aesthetic of the well known weatherboard. Purposefully sourced by a local supplier, this Australian timber is milled, kiln-dried and precision profiled in house in Narangba, Queensland.
